Tour Description

This unusual ski crossing takes us in 5 days from the Zillertal to the Reschenpass. The downhill enjoyment is focussed; we have the skins with us, but we use cable cars and skilifts where it lends itself. So it is possible for us to handle this quite respectable route in a relatively short time. Our very special plus: since we usually leave on the so-called “wrong” side, we are mostly very lonely on the way and can enjoy many pristine ski runs in a quiet nature.

We meet in Jenbach in Tirol (arrival ideally with public transport). we continue with the Zillertalbahn and the bus to Hintertux. There we use lifts and cable cars to reach the Höllscharte (about 3000 m, transition from the Zillertal into the Wipptal). The small Kaserer (3093 m) offers us a nearby, beautiful summit destination. Afterwards we have the fantastic descent to Toldern in the Schmirntal in front of us. Once at the bottom, we continue by public transport to the Stubai Valley, where we spend the night in a cozy inn.

With the cable cars of the Stubai glacier ski area we shorten the way to the Daunkopf (3225 m, 2 hours). From its summit we ski down to the lonely Sulztalferner. Another short climb takes us over the Wütenkarsattel (3103 m, 1 hour) to Hochstubaihütte (3174 m, 1 hour, closed in winter). From there, a long firn descent to the Windachtal, a side valley of the Ötztal awaits. Our destination is reached with the village of Sölden, where we stay overnight.

3. Tag
Directly from Sölden we start today's ascent. With the cable car we reach the Rettenbachjoch (2990 m), which connects the Ötztal with the Pitztal. The right Fernerkogel (3300 m, 2.5 hours) offers us a beautiful ski mountain. After a long summit rest we draw our tracks over wide glaciers and beautiful firn slopes down into the Pitztal. We will spend the night in the village of Mandarfen.

4. Tag
The lifts of the Pitztaler Gletscherbahnen are a welcome help to reach the Mittelbergjoch (3166 m). The subsequent descent on the Taschachferner ends at the Taschachhaus (2432 m). Here we leave this popular ski variant and ascend to the Ölgrubenjoch (3044 m, 2 hrs.). Even today, we can "take" a 3000-meter peak: the nearby Ölgrubenspitze is a nice summit destination (3452 m, 1.5 hours, optional). The slopes on its west side are covered with ideal spring snow at our arrival and lead us down to Kaunertal. We stay in a cozy hotel.

5. Tag
Again, the cable cars and lifts of the Kaunertal Skiresort help us to climb up to the magnificent Weißseespitze (3353 m, 2 hours). This ski summit, which is very often climbed from Kaunertal, has a lonely south side and we use this fact for a successful completion of our tour. With a difference in altitude of 1600 m we draw our tracks on wonderful spring snow slopes to the alpine village of Melag in the South Tyrolean Langtauferer valley. By public transport (optionally with a shared taxi) we travel comfortably to the train station in Landeck-Zams. From there we can easily reach our starting point Jenbach by train.
