Tour Character

High Alpine crossing of the highest Eastern Alpine mountain mass. Steep and exposed glacier passages, medium difficult and exposed rock climbing on the ridge.

Required Skill and Fitness Level

Skill: You should be absolutely safe and comfortable on crampons – walking or climbing. A few short sections will be as steep as 45 degrees. Efficient and easy rock climbing up to level III+.

Fitness: Up to 10 hour climbs per day (see tour itinerary).

Tour Description

Even though I have been climbing this classic up to the only 4000m peak of the Eastern Alps: it is still an amazingly impressive experience to me. The ascent to the Fuorcla Prievlusa in the light of our head lamps. The first climbing spots at the break of dawn. And then the white ladder to the heavens – the Bianco ridge leading to Piz Bernina at first day light. Before reaching to the highest peak of the Eastern Alps we have master the “Gratgendarmen” (rock towers in the ridge). After this accomplishment, the descent along the Spallagrat to the Marco e Rosa Hut is pure bliss.

1. Tag

Meeting point at 2 pm at the train station in Pontresina. Materialcheck and climb to the Tschierva hut (about 3 hours). overnight stay

2. Tag

Via the Biancograt on the Piz Bernina, descent via the Spallagrat to the Marco e Rosa hut and continue over the Bellavista terrace and the Fortezzagrat to Berghaus Diavolezza. With the cable car and the Bernina train back to Pontresina.
